Question by : You up for planting onions in a 2×3 foot square foot garden on the cheap?

How to jump start your Sq Ft2 Garden on the cheap.
With transfer onions planting season hard upon us since mid-January, the need to get an affordable Square Foot garden going, for us newbies, forced the design of a really cheapo start up system. I accumulated more than sufficient materials, (lots left over for another application) for under 25 bucks which is less than just the cost of 15 cinder blocks going into our 2 block high ft2 garden in the back yard.
One bag of potting soil can fit onto a starter Sq Ft box made by cutting up one 2″x 4″x 120″ (10′) long pressure treated decking board (2 each 24″ and 2 each 36″ boards Deck screwed together at their ends to make a frame suitable for laying on the ground and placed in a sunny area that gets no shade for at least 6 hours every day, year round.)
In the box laying on the ground one turns the dirt with a shovel, adz, hoe, etc. and then turns in a layer of shredded newspaper mixed thoroughly with a week’s worth of garbage, some leaves and some dog (not cat) poo. Spray down this mess with bio-degradable dish soap and wet it all down somewhat. Lay the bag of potting soil just next to the sq ft gardening box. Cut open the organic potting soil bag with a knife or box cutter and pour that into the managed soil inside sq. ft. box. Pitchfork the mess underneath up into the potting soil somewhat – enough to get the composting materials a head start and the smell of the organic material into the ground to attract worms. Water lightly and poke holes for the onions at the recommended spacing intervals recommended by the literature for this form of gardening.
Plant seeds or set sprout transfers in the standard sq ft style. Remember to put identification sticks next to each type of onion set; water lightly 2 – 3 times a week and jump back. Voila, veggies on the cheap!
We have three different onions sets and plan to leave room adjacent to each type to plant additional sets every 3 -4 weeks so that we can harvest fresh organic onions on a continuous basis.
Inspiration for this simple sort of Sq. Foot Garden came from reviewing this form of gardening in the how-to materials at http://www.garden.org/

P.S., What is your favorite el cheapo veggie garden trick?

“P.S., What is your favorite el cheapo veggie garden trick?”
Since this is your only question, I’ll go with that.
Saving seeds is one of my favorite “cheap tricks”. Also, cleaning out discarded tires, and using them as potato towers. Plant a potato in one tire, as it grows, add a tire and more dirt until it’s about 4 tires high. You get a ton more potatoes out of each stack than with the traditional “mounding” method.

Yeah, I’m going down to Lowe’s to get a couple pressure treated boards and make my first sq ft garden too. Or as soon as the ice melts here abouts. It’s not that I can’t drive on black ice. It’s the danger from all the locals who think they should drive like it’s a sunny day in California in their good ole boy pickups when it’s slicker than owl snot. Know whut uh mean Vernon?
Hey! I have a couple old tires to build a potato mound, too. Thanks for the tip!
