Worms: Thousands Escaping from Compost Bin. I failed to put ventilation holes in my home-made worm bin (for vermi-composting), which worked ok for months until I really over-fed it once. Then it got a funky smell and apparently the worms did NOT like it! They crawled up to the edge and were either trying to escape or trying to get some fresh air away from the funky smell. This has never happened before. But I learned my lessons: 1) Put ventilation holes in the lid, and 2) do not over-feed the worm bins. Live and Learn! Happy Gardening! (PS: no worms were harmed in the making of this video…. and actually thousands were saved!)
What Laura Elrod said…. they definately DON’T like to be in see through containers Must be DARK !!!

i love your attitude to living and learning. i have a mini worm farm that i made from layering small lunch box containers. i dream of owning 3 full sized farms one day! i lovd that they burrow down when they’re hot and rise to thd surface to feed when it is cool. i love opening the lid of my worm farm to see all the little wormies slither away from the light. and the worm tea they produce is sooo great for my plants :-)

Over feeding to quickly creates heat, so much heat that it can kill your worms. More than likely that’s why they were trying to leave. Worms aren’t sensitive to smell but they are to temperatures and to light. They do need air but they breath through their skin and must have moisture to do so but they can drown. Happy vermacomposting!

I like to use old redwood fencing material to build my worm boxes. The wood seems to breath and drain better than plastic.
I also have a worm bin made of nesting plastic bins with lots of drainage. I find that if I pour lots of water through the bin that I don’t even need to pull out castings. The worms waste (toxins) come out as tea.
I’ve acctuly abused this particular bin with composting it and adding fats and meat and the colony has survived and recovered…so now I have Super worms!!

Thanks for your approval. I always like to get permission when using others material. I wrote up an article about worms escaping bins, causes, and solutions. The article is located in the troubleshooting section of the forum. Feel free to stop by the site (link in my channel) and give feedback. Thanks again.

Yes, yes, definitely use my follies/mistakes as a teaching tool!
In that case this video has served its intended purpose!

I embedded this vid on my site for others to learn from. I used it as reference for an article in the forum about worms escaping. Thanks for sharing,

I have seen this mass escape also in my homemade bin outside also. They were leaving castings all up the sides. I find that when I see this… its time to set up a fresh new bin for them & start over with fresh bedding & new food on top. I have drilled sides & holes in bottom, so I know they are getting air. Its about every 2-3 months I have to turn it over for them to keep them happy in a homemade one.
