Question by : With dairy & egg allergies, how would I do in New Orleans, with all the seafood?
I’m heading to Louisiana for the first time soon, I live in Canada. I’m a bit worried because when I go to restaurants, I don’t have many options open to me because of my allergies; except fish (because they usually contain no dairy). Thankfully, I love seafood. But is it done differently in Louisiana? I’ve never been any where near the southern part of America, and I’m worried that most the food I’ll get in the restaurant would have milk or eggs in it. Please help me out here!

  1. Louisiana is full of seafood. My bf and I went there this past march and most of the place were seafarrivedsteraunts. I would suggest looking up resteraunts online in the area you are going to be staying at. Alot of places have their menus online and from there you can get a general feel for what kind of food will be at what places.Hope I helped.Have an awesome trip, its fun down there!

  2. the French influence in Cajun cooking will contain a lot of dairy in the sauces. Just avoid the heavy cream style sauces and you’ll be fine.

  3. My aunt is allergic to shellfish. You tell the waiter/waitress and they can accommodate you. Her being allergic to shellfish in new orleans is a lot harder than dairy and eggs so i do not think she will have a problem. We don’t cook seafood with eggs and dairy unless it is with a sauce.

Also you can Just get boiled seafood. Stay away from fried or ask if they use milk and eggs in the batter.

We are all about SPICES. Tell your waiter/ waitress when you first sent down and ask them to talk to the chef to see what they can do. try Blackened Redfish which is just fish with blackeneding spices at kpauls.

Remember to talk to the waiters they are there to accommodate you. Ask what is in the gumbo and red beans. I have made red beans with out dairy. Gumbo sometimes can have egg.
