Winter Worm Ranch – Part I

www.RedWormComposting.com Presents…a quick look at my current winter vermicomposting bed. I set it up late in the fall with coffee grounds, fall leaves, straw, and left-over garden crops. I have access to a steady supply of coffee grounds from a local coffee shop which will definitely help as things get colder.

  5. - flat tail generally indicates Lumbricus sp. PE’s are called “Spike Tails” for a reason! lol. Just past teeshirt weather in Long Island?? Wow. Didn’t think you guys were THAT much warmer than us (in Southern Ontario).

  6. nice update 🙂 we’re just passing teeshirt-ish weather in Long Island,NY. had a few frosty nights but the kale and few other things are doing fine still…. i got a few compost piles going today in the cubic-yard size. then a BIG pile of mostly leaves and horse manure..i left a few garbage bags of manure on top and have been finding worms clustered beneath, flat tail is PE variety? anyway theyre going in the 3’x6′ manure flow-thru bin.covered with a tarp and cardboard for a lil more insulation.

  7. Ewweeee! Luckily i’m still walking around in a tee shirt so far.Last winter it started off cold quick! Looks good! My flowthru is working great with heat from coffee, etc.Luckily i can open the bottom or whatever if i want it to cool off a bit.Doesn’t help much. But the worms got a lot of space to escape the heat.
