Question by jayne m: Will invisable fencing work with goats?
I have two mini nubian goats who I want to allow to roam most of the yard, but need to keep them away from the house. An invisible fence makes sence, but would it work?

  1. I dont know how well it would work, since you have to train them with a shock collar. They aren’t as easy to train as a dog would be. Not to mention invisible fences are a bit pricey, especially if you have alot of area to cover.
Electric fences are usually the cheapest way to go, but you have to use at least 4 rows of it (different heights…closer at the bottom). I’ve used an electric fence with my goats and that was kinda of 50/50 with them even with the 4 strands. Sometimes they would stay in, sometimes they would walk right through the fence regarless of the shock they got.
Goats are major escape artists and can be stubborn.

  2. I don’t think it will work. Goats don’t like to back up from anything and are more than willing to take a shock to get where they want to go. I do know of a couple of farms that let the goats roam but they both have the house fenced off .

  3. I don’t know if it will work or not. You might want to use electric fencing. They only get zapped once or twice and they know not to go there anymore. Also, my goats act like they know if the fence is on or not. I think they might be able to hear it or something. If it’s on, they won’t go near it, but if it’s off, they don’t even hesitate to go through it. I don’t know if your goats could hear if the invisible fence is on or not or know what the beeping noise means before thay get shocked. You might be able to train them to it, but it takes a while to train dogs and I don’t know how long it would take to train your goats to it. Electric fencing does the same thing but it is less expensive.
