Question by surferchickk: Why do they size sort the abalone at each stage of aquaculture?
Is it possible to collect abalone in the wild? Where, if yes? Any restrictions on the methods of collection?

  1. Abalone is separated for economic purposes as certain sizes have more demand on the market depending upon fluctuating interest and costs, blah blah economic babble.

Collecting abalone from the wild is a fluctuating situation. Certain areas have restrictions whilst others are open for public harvesting. There are however restrictions placed upon the amount of abalone to be removed and the method of removal.

South Africa has recently had it’s abalone ban lifted and it is once again legal to harvest abalone from the wild.

I would implore you please, not do this. The creature is already threatened, why is it necessary to harass this mollusk until it becomes critically endangered and sadly one day extinct?
