Question by Dawn B: Why do my chickens prefer to eat cat food over chicken feed?
I have to feed the cats early in the morning or late at night while the chickens are locked up in the pen or they will devour the entire pan of cat food. Ironically it is chicken flavored cat food. And the cats do not try to take down the chickens either!
Can you help? Leave your own answer in the comments!
chickens like a bit of variety. if you were fed bread every day, you’d want to eat something else as well. also if the cat food is chicken flavoured and they like it, stop them otherwise they will soon find out there is a source of chicken amongst themselves and peck each other which could injure a bird!!!

Because, im not saying chickens are unintelligent, they are jsut… stupid when it comes to food. they never like what your meant to give them. give them your scraps, and they’ll like those. My friends ate her dogs food…
basically they’re just picky, dont know whats good for them and prefer ur food over theirs.

A lot of the cheap dry cat food is over half grain, so the chickens would eat it and not have a problem.

Chickens will consume 30% of their calories from grass, if allowed to truly “free range.” Since grass is very low in calories, that’s a WHOLE LOT of grass! Another thing chickens need is animal protein. Chickens are omnivores, just like the humans they’ve kept company with for all these millennia.
