  2. Well, the choice depends on what you want to do.

I have Nigerian Dwarfs, and I absolutely love them. They are so friendly – if I go in the pen they all run over to me because they want to get petted or held or get their hooves rubbed – they’re not spoiled at all 😉 They are also great milkers and great show goats. They can be any color under the sun, and some have blue eyes.

I’ve never had pygmy goats, but my friend does and they are also friendly. I find that there is not as wide a color variety in pygmies as their are in Nigerians, but there are still some very nice colors. They can be shown, although I think they’re shown as a meat breed, while Nigerians are shown as a dairy breed. They can produce milk, but they aren’t a dairy breed and so don’t produce as much as the Nigerians. And even though both Nigerians and Pygmies are small, they are built differently. Pygmies are more stocky, often described as “barrels on legs,” while Nigerians are more proportionally correct.

So, if you want pets, either one is fine. If you wanted to show, it would depend if you wanted to show in dairy goat shows or meat goat shows. If you wanted dairy, the Nigerians would be the better choice.

If you still can’t decide, you could always get one of each and then decide which breed you liked better.

    Good luck! 🙂
