Question by Catherine G: Which is the ideal water heating option?
My husband and I have been considering more eco-friendly approaches to our energy expense.

Which is the best…. or better… option?
Standard water heater
Tank-less water heater
Solar water heater

Also – consider the longevity of each and maintenance.
Thanks.

  1. If you’re heating with fuel, tankless heaters are much more conservative of both fuel and water.
Solar has the lowest environmental impact as well as the lowest long-term costs. Considerations that are important to the choice are the amount of insolation at your site (not just in your area) and potential for freeze damage. Most solar systems require largish storage tanks, which may present structural problems.
For boost/backup to the solar system, tankless is again the way to go.

  2. I like the idea of a well insulated tank type hot water heater that is preheated with solar. Tank less have flow issues. They also get messed up if your water is not really soft. The short term power used by a tank less is off the chart.
