  1. Tankless… It only makes hot water on demand so you are not wasting energy when your not using hot water.

  2. Its according to where you live, If you live out in the country I’d go for the Wood stove with the water jacket You can heat a big house and hot water is free, All you have to do it feed it wood every few days, , If city I’d go for gas, The Solar is going to be too expensive so Is Electric. Hope this helps and have a Great

  3. Short answer: the one that keeps your water from getting cold.

    (But, seriously folks…)

For most practical situations, consider the European model: water heating near the place where you want the water to be hot. These individual water heating units don’t store heated water, but rather go on only when you want hot water. They are typically electric, not gas. They take a little getting used to, but they are far more efficient than the silly American water heating tanks that we are used to having in our homes and appartments. Installation is usually under the cabinet of the kitchen or the bathroom sink, if it fits there. They will save hundreds of dollars a year once installed. A little tough to retrofit, but if you are building new, definitely consider them.

For pools and larger water systems, a passive solar system can work in more temperate areas. Large surface mats of black plastic with tubes running through them circulate cold, incoming water on south-facing roof tops and then store the water in water heating tanks below. Not nearly as efficient as the Euro model, but it’s domestically fashionable to advertise to neighbors that you are down with solar.

If you are stuck with heating water the American way, choose gas over electric (it is currently cheaper), get the unit off the floor of the garage (if that’s where it has to be), and strap it to the wall. If the unit has to be inside the house (bad idea), make sure to accommodate the possiblity that the darn thing is going to break in 7-10 years and leak all over the place, typically while you are gone on a two week vacation. Installers can help with guarding against major damage.

    Good luck

  4. Get a gas tank less heater. It will only heat the water as you need it.
