Question by Hayden: Where can you buy quality solar powered street lamps?
I work for the green committee at my high school, and one of the ideas that was brought up was to replace the lights in the parking lot (which run all night long) with solar powered ones. That way they could charge during the day, turn on at dusk, and run all night without sucking power from the grid.
Feel free to answer in the comment section below
home depot or lowes

The immediate way to save 50-75% of the power is to run off the lights at midnight. Lobby for that.
Longer term, the way to save big using solar is not to have individual devices like streets lamps, but large solar arrays, that collect energy that the school can use to power whatever it wants, including street lights. That requires having a school in a location ideal for solar, and a taxpayer base willing to support the project. For example, http://www.fhs.fuhsd.org/measureb/solar_panels

Solar powered street and parking lot lights cannot be purchased from a home improvement store. A manufacturer of commercial solar lights is what is required. Check out the two sites referenced below. One is a manufacturer and the other is Federal, State, and Local tax and grant money information.
The solar parking lot lights need to be sized for your specific area so that there are multiple days of backup storage in the batteries to make sure that the lights run if there is bad weather. Also there are many different fixture choices when going to the manufacturer directly as they can usually customize the project to whatever the needs of the project is.
