Question by zayneb: Where can I find information on the abuse of turkeys?
I read a news article online a few years ago that detailed some of the abuse that turkeys receive at many of the commercial farms that raise them in the US: they have trouble standing due to the genetic modifications for larger breasts, they often have their beaks cut off to keep them from fighting, etc. But I can’t find anything on it now except for a small thing on PetaTV that talks about general abuse by bored workers. Does anyone know where I can find information on the systematic abuse of turkeys on the internet?

  1. They don’t have their beaks cut off, they have them clipped. Which means just the sharp tip. Otherwise they can, and will, kill each other. If one turkey is bleeding or hurt in the flock, the rest will kill it. That’s why their beaks are clipped. I am not making any comment on the treatment in general of the animals, only saying the clipped beak is for a good reason.

  5. I have to tell you, I think PETA’s the best site. Goveg.org is part of their site. You can also check Google for “turkey abuse” although some searches about the country Turkey tend to get mixed in. Here are a couple I came up with.

Also check the news section of Google. That will turn up more recent links.

You’re very right about the abuse. They are genetically modified so that their breasts become abnormally huge. They often become lame and sometimes their legs snap. Their beaks and toes are cut without anesthesia. They are often dunked in boiling water while still alive and fully conscious for feather removal.

Be sure to browse PETA’s website more thoroughly because there’s a lot of really good information there. Also check out the article below in the resources section. At the end the sources of that article are cited.
