A different plant in every square foot. Obviously, we still have some planting to do.

  1. Well, I use 1 part peat moss, 1 part bagged miracle grow garden soil and one part native soil. Half of my property is wooded, and I just went in the woods and got a couple wheelbarrows of rich topsoil. Make sure you add water to the mix…don’t add dry peat moss because it will actually wick moisture away from the roots. Mix the three together well and voila. My plants do phenomenal.

  2. You can think of raised beds as something like oversize planters. You want a soil medium that will hold some moisture since raised beds are more exposed to drying wind and also drain much faster. Some people would use a potting mix, but regardless you need a high percentage of organic material such as compost to help hold the moisture.

  3. We buy bags of Miracle-Gro soil, or their potting soil. Both are good.

Don’t just ask for soil. It will be hard as a rock when dry. Done that.
