What Urban Homesteading Looks Like (part 1)

You don’t have to retreat to a cabin in the forest to grow your own tomatoes and raise chickens, you can do it anywhere. People are growing cucumbers on windowsills in a Los Angeles and harvesting honey on the rooftops of New York City. A new way of participating in the food/life cycle is blushing on the horizon. We are living in the dawn of the ecotarian. People want to get back (don’t make me say it) to their roots (gotcha!). A relatively new movement, urban homesteading takes “simple living” to the next level (sorry Martha) through incorporating small-scale agriculture, sustainable and permaculture gardening, and home food production and storage into every day life. By growing their own food and harnessing natural energy, city dwellers are reconnecting with their land while planting seeds for the future for our cities. Over the past 4 years Michelle has transformed her tiny cement jungle of a patio into an urban homestead complete with compost piles, laundry lines, and edible produce. Pretty impressive for a girl who couldn’t keep a spider plant alive a mere four years ago.

  1. I think thats a little sexist, I am the one that wants to simple it down. My husband thinks the idea is ridiculous. I want rabbits for meat, goats for milk and fiber and possibly a pig. I have a garden that provides a great deal in the summer but i still cant get him on board with what i want. very frustrating.

  4. Advice to Men: Take a long vacation OUTSIDE America, NZ, Oz, Thailand, Eastern Europe, etc. take your time to meet and get to know a good hearted woman who will appreciate what you have to offer. Once you do, don’t abuse your rare position of having a loyal, loving, giving partner, treat her with respect and chances are it will be wonderful–far better odds than 99% of US women. Thanks,

  5. Why am I sexist for pointing out the obvious truth? Most men figure what it takes to attract and keep a woman, notice it takes loads of money, comfort and luxuries, works his arse off to TRY to keep her happy, but more often than not STILL fails. Just look around. American woman by and large are miserable and bitter. They blame men for everything and have arrogant outlooks about life. Thanks.

  9. Wonderful women like this can be found quite simply. Be a quality man and you will attract a quality woman. By the way, you wont find them in bars. Try farmers markets, libraries, and volunteer organizations, basically everywhere where YOU can become a better person.

  12. This is a great vid and example of small scale homesteading. I’d have loved a longer ‘tour’ of what you have growing and how you accomodate in the space you have. Thanks!!!

  16. The #1 obsticle toward this kind of valuable and dignified living is: not enough females to do it with. Many men live for this kind of stuff: hunting, farming, building and improvising. many women on the other hand enjoy going to the mall, buying stuff and running up credit cards. If the world is ever going to change, it will be when women respond to simple, frugal men who have skills, not loads of cash. Thanks.
