  1. A mix of small farms growing multiple crops. A rural society isn’t much of a rural society if there are only a few large farms and not very many, if any, small ones.

Livestock are also great for the land. Put some cattle, sheep, chickens and goats out on this community, rotationally graze them on pastures with mixed grass/legume, annual forages or crop-residue, and you’ll see the land and soil improve much more than if crops were solely grown.

  2. This question is a little more complex than that. You need to remember that every area is different, different climates, soil types, terrains, people, attitudes, sales opportunities, etc.

Generally multiple crops is preferable for many reasons. The biggest ones being soil health and if one fails there’s others to back it up. However in some areas there might only be 2-3 viable crops. Due to climate, soil, sales opportunities, terrain, etc. If it doesn’t grow well we won’t grow it, if we have to transport it say 100 miles when others can be sold within 10 miles, chances are we won’t grow it.
