They were somewhat confused when we opened the door for them to have yard time.
Question by LukeWarm: What type of food and drinks do southerners and country folk usually have at get-togethers?
I’m having a grad party and I want a little diversity on the tables as far as food and drinks. I’m curious what is out there. You can’t find backyard recipes in cook books so I’m going to ask the source directly (you being the source). I’m diverse so if there are any other cultures out there who have ideas then please share. Thank you!

Well, I’m a southerner (from Alabama) but I’m not one of the country folk or red necks (etc.), so I’m not sure how valuable my opinion would be to you.
Whenever anyone I know has a get-together (assuming we’re talking about the summer, not spring, fall or winter) we have a big pitcher of iced tea, usually with some lemon slices in it, some watermelon, hamburgers, maybe some barbecued ribs and some sort of grilled wiener (hot dogs, sausages… whatever)… sauerkraut, sometimes a potato salad, some jello with chunks of fruit (like pineapples, etc), and maybe a blueberry pie… or other pie (though, I think pecan and pumpkin should wait for the fall).
You might occasionally find some fried chicken, mashed potatoes or other types of “soul food”… but I think I’ve seen that more now that I’ve become a part of one of our black families, so I’m not sure if it’s a black thing or a southern thing.
But the main thing, in the summer, is the iced tea and the watermelon!

A lot of different get-togethers that I’ve been to have foods like hotdogs, hamburgers, steak, chips, salads, and other sorts. Where I’m from, every single one that I’ve been to had fried chicken and mashed potatoes. They also have unsweet and sweet tea. I guess it just depends on the kind of gathering you’re having. Hope this helped!
