Question by batter101: What type of degree or education is needed to work for a humanitarian org. or group abroad?
I’ve always been interested in working for a charity or humantarian group overseas. Violence Against women especillay interests me. I’ve always wanted to educate women abroad or perhaps try to implament changes in attitudes of different societies about women (I’m well aware this is a long shot in some countries, but you get the type of work I’m interested in). Does anyone have any personal experiances, or know what I should do, perhaps what orgs. are good to shoot for? Thank you!

Any degree that you can mould (by choosing modules smartly) to shouwing that your interests lie in caring for people.
Learn Development Studies, Politics, International Business or something in healthcare and social-work.
Speaking another language can boost your chances of landing a nice position for a non-profit organisation or a ngo abroad.
I wish you the very best of luck with your noble endeavour.

It depends on what kind of work you want to do. If you want to help people learn sustainable farming, you need an agriculture degree. If you want to help build access to clean water supplies, then you should be an engineer. If you want to help the sick, a health care degree (nurse, physician assistant) is helpful. If you want to educate poor children, get a teaching certificate. It entirely depends on your interests.

I don’t have personal experience but I don’t think it matters what degree you get – what matters is that you start by volunteering in the field you are interested in to see if you really do like the work…and then appy to work for organizations whose goals you support.
