Question by : What kind of milk goat should I get?
My family is looking to get a few goats for milking and I was wondering what breed would be best. We don’t want the largest goat or the one that produces the most milk… any ideas? Thanks!

Please no neg. comments!
I realize that having a goat will take a lot of work and we are willing to do that. I have also done a lot of research and I was just seeking for some opinions on some breeds.

  2. I would strongly recommend a LOT of research before you get any! They are not for the casual owner. Talk to you local LARGE animal vet and some people who have them in your area.

They need proper housing, hay, and hay racks, grain, yearly vaccinations, frequent worming, 2X daily milking 300 days a year, yearly TB/Brucellosis testing etc., etc., etc.

Unless you and your family are willing to devote money and a load of time for them, buy your milk in the store.

And a certain breed doesn’t mean a lot of milk. The quality of hay and the percentage of protein in the grain fed, plus the genetics, determine the amount of milk.

  3. Obviously after making sure you have the proper facilities to care for them and also purchasing a milk stand would be a good idea. I raise Nigerian Dwarfs and all the does should stay bellow 22 1/2 inches. All other goat breeds are around 30 inches. These measurements do not include the neck and head btw. Nigerians don’t produce the most milk and they aren’t the biggest as they are a dwarf breed. Good quality ones can produce quite a bit of milk though. Not sure about how much you’d need depending on family size.

  4. If you want a smaller goat I would have to tell you to go for the Nigerian Dwarfs, they are very good goats to have if they are around children, but don’t necessarily produce a huge amount of milk. If you don’t mind having a large goat and want a good milk producer some good breeds are Nubian, Oberhasli, Toggenburgs, Lamanchas, and Saanens/Sables. If you plan on having kids show them I highly suggest the Nigerians, large goats like to pull kids across the show ring.
