Okay, this *so* isn’t a bento, but leftover pizza from Hopworks. It was fantastically good, though, and I heartily suggest getting this if you happen to be at Hopworks.
BBQ sauce, cheese, chicken, BACON, grilled onions, and cilantro. Bloody fantastic.

Question by sweetstrwbrry: What is wrong with food preservatives?
I hear a lot especially from organic companies and what not that preservatives are bad in food. Okay I can understand how it can be bad if you consume nothin but the stuff. But preservatives are in practically EVERYTHING! And there are foods that a really good and you can’t buy them without preservatives (like cream o wheat, yum!). What is wrong with them, why do people make such a big deal?
Give your answer to this question below!
Preservatives used in food are subject to very strict control by regulatory authorities so technically there is nothing wrong with them at all. Of course some people believe everybody lives on the edge of a field with happy pigs and chickens running around in the sun, but for most people life isn’t like that and you certainly can’t feed a large urban population without food preservatives. Indeed many preservatives were originally used by country families to preserve gluts of food for later use – salt for preserving meat, sugar for preserving fruit (it’s called jam) and vinegar for preserving vegetables. Others are needed to make foods safe – nitrites to brevent botulism in preserved meats, and so on.
Of course of preservatives aren’t needed then don’t use them, but if they are needed and are regulated, look life in the face and accept that millions of people would starve without them – look at what happens in Africa where about half the food grown spoils and is wasted because of the lack of food preservation techniques. If we were able to find ways to deliver modern food preservatives in that environment we could prevent this loss and greatly reduce hunger. But of course the organic lobby would rather see people starve than admit that in the right circumstances food preservation is essential.
