Sarah is what industry calls a broiler, a type of chicken bred for consumption.
They are killed at only 6 weeks of age. 9.2 billion are slaughtered in the US each year.
They are not protected by the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act so don’t have to be rendered insensible to pain before their throats are cut.
Sarah arrived with nine other birds from a hatchery after being shipped through the postal service. Fifty of the 500 birds died en route, the rest confiscated by Oakland Animal Services.

Both body weight gain and feed conversion are improved. I.e., they get bigger quicker and cheaper.
