Question by ils23: What is the best way to eat a breadfruit?
My family put a breadfruit tree in our backyard a little while ago and it is starting to bear some small fruits. What is the best way to eat them? How can I tell when they are ripe? Can they be eaten raw? Do you have any good recipes involving breadfruit?
Please answer as many of these questions as you want. Thanks!

  1. You shouldn’t eat breadfruit raw as it isn’t digestible that way.

Whether or not breadfruit is ripe enough to eat depends on how you want to eat it.

Breadfruit is called breadfruit because it tastes like plain bread when you pick it before it gets sweet. You bake it and you can eat it as is. Most people don’t like eating breadfruit while it is sweet because it doesn’t have a flavor that matches its texture.

My father at breadfruit along with various meats. Although, I never enjoyed them as they were too plain tasting. I preferred bananas, mangos, and pineapples.

  2. You can also peel, chop into chunks and put in a stew or where potatoes are used. Peel, slice thin and fry in oil, salt to taste. Eat like a french fry. Bake in its peel then open and dip in soyu, salt and chicken drippings. (Not too healthy, but good!) Bake in peel, then peel breadfruit, chop into chunks, add coconut milk, sugar, mash slightly. Eat hot or cold. Can also add grated coconut to this one.
You can tell when ripe mostly by watching the fruit mature on the tree. You will be able to tell. Over ripe is soft and strong smelling. The outside of the fruit will have beads of white sap when nearing ripe. This all depends on the type of breadfruit you have growing.
Hope this helped you out a bit.. Happy eating!!
