  1. ANY WHOLE GRAINS PRODUCTS ARE BEST. BUT FAR AS FRUIT ANY KIND OF FRUIT WILL DO.

  4. Actually, ours love suet hung in their yard. They also love tomatos, grapes, plums, and MELON is a favorite. We give them some kind of treat daily, but then let them eat the feed. I will only hang one block of suet each week. Sometimes they eat it in two days.

They say you can feed them most anything and many people keep compost buckets in the kitchen and dump it in with the chickens daily. But then others say this is not a good choice because they will not eat enough of the feed they require and laying can be effected. So we try to add treats in moderation.

  5. bird feed, it has all different kinds of seeds with many nutrients, of course its a bit more expensive but it sure makes them healthy especially during the winter when they need it the most but don’t cut out the corn as it helps build there internal furnace to heat them for the really cold nights.

  6. Well never give them Whole corn. Cracked corn is fine. I prefer scratch cornt though. But they need to be fed scratch for chickens because that is there main diet.

You can give them what I do as treats a couple times durring a month each year.
I go to the groshery store and get a cucumber, tomatoe, Romane Lettuce(icubug gives them diahrea), carrot, watermelon, and corn from a can or from a cob. Then I cut lil pieces and put them on a paper plate or in there food bowel.

  7. Really, anything you eat. It might not be a fuit or veggie, but scraps are fine for them and they LOVE it!

If you can get your hands on some canned tomatoes, they will love you forever.

PS: Beth, chickens get absolutly NO nutritional value from scratch and it should NOT be used as a main staple. You can use layer crumble, meat bird crumble, game crumble, etc but they don’t get anything of value from scratch.

  8. Another important thing to note is how much of the seed you are giving is actually just filler. Many less expensive feeds use a lot of filler, which the birds don’t generally eat and are basically a waste of money and can make a mess in your yard. Filler seeds include milo, sorghum, red millet and golden millet. Birds will push through these fillers to get the food they want, so it is more financially sound to choose one that is higher quality.:
