garden, and cleared a massive area which wont have anything done to it till next year.

i was thinking of saving some money by growing something edible that i can harvest before next summer.

  1. i don’t know your area, but in the harshest of environment (meaning cold and freezing) a cabbage/brussel sprout/broccoli patch will survive.. these are winter vegetables. i live where it ices for months and it doesn’t kill them, they grow super slow though and survive til’ spring and then wahlah… lettuce and kale too…especially kale…

for looks though, another two very hardy covers are rosemary and mint (i highly recommend)…

if you live in lower altitudes with not quite as freezing weather than these items will florish for you. you could actually have a winter garden than can be dormant for summer just keep watering these items in summer and they will just keep going on and on like perenniels.

remember to plant your garlic bulbs this time of year… they will establish go dormant and then in very early spring go wild growing.. and people don’t realize you can eat the whole plant, let the vines grow and grow and snip them in summer like chives and freeze…put the greens in soups or anything.. they are more flavor than the garlic.

you will also need to remember that peas and beets will need to go in the ground mid-winter to late winter so that they will be ready to produce first days of spring..

good luck hope I helped you.

  3. I certainly wouldn’t grow mint because it is too invasive and if you are in the UK it won’t grow in winter but will lie dormant. Rosemary isn’t a ground cover but of could be planted now but then you would have to remove it prior to completing the garden. Why not sow broad beans. They will certainly survive the winter and give you a good crop of what seems to be scarce in supermarkets these days! Brassicas would also be good and of course garlic.
