Question by Neerdowellian: What does one do with a herd of goats?
I read an article about weird items offered for sale on Craigslist, and among them was a herd of goats. Over 30 of them to be precise. Why exactly would someone want a herd of goats? Do you kill them and eat them? It seems like overkill for keeping your grass, bushes, and other foliage trimmed back. Anyone?

i think you would just recline and watch chaos unfold before your very eyes. it would be like a goat big brother.

Depends on what type of goats they were. Someone was getting out of goats and either had a meat breeding herd or a dairy herd. Very few people have goats just to keep down brush. My herd numbers about 55 now that the babies have started coming. Some commercial goat dairies have 500 or more goats as do some big meat goat farms and ranches. Most hobby breeders keep 10 to 20.
Our herd is for producing milk for my family, our other farm animals, for making cheese and soap, and for showing.

As previously mentioned, for dairy or meat production. But also, some herders have them for hire specifically for grass etc. trimming especially where it is difficult to get machines in to keep it trimmed. I’ve seen a truck with goats letting out the herd along certain areas of road/highway just for that purpose. They’re excellent at what they do, it’s safer for man and it’s green technology all the way. I’d love to rent goats for lawn and brush services – either as a business or as a service. Meat and milk are a bonus.

As previously stated, you have the dairy goat breeds…. used to make goat milk and goat cheeses
and you have your meat goats… used for slaughter, I live in Ga and goat meat is very popular down here, it is also not as fatterning as beef.
but some people also raise them for show animals like for 4-H, I have a small herd of meat goats, simply because I enjoy interacting with them and watching goats….be goats :o)
Goats are very social creatures, they like climbing, playing butting, and are VERY curious.
