These chickens are owned by Melissa’s neighbors – they run all around their backyard. After we prepared dinner, we fed them our vegetable scraps.

ok i have a big chicken and she lays eggs and run around by herself..etc… but we recently got 4 baby chicks and have tons more coming! We feed them oyster shells, and corn scratch, but what else? And i let them out everyday but how can i play with them and train them to follow me?

  1. stop feeding oyster shells,it’s too much calcium ,it will cause you problems.only feed calcium to egg layers.none for roosters or chicks. to tame them you will need to handle them a lot . be careful intoducing the chicks to the old chicken ,she might kill them. let them scratch and find bugs/worms/plants to eat.

  2. We have 150 chicks, we feed them crumbles. They can not digest corn until they are old enough to have grit in their craw.

  3. Feed them chick feed medicated and the chicks will probably only fallow a hen.

  4. I have a large farm with a lot of chickens, free range.I will tell you what i do,new introduction to established birds needs a lot of vigilance & patience.Apart from formulated feed made specially for chickens ,you can include for variety some dry bread crumbs & chopped greens. As they grow older larger grain can be given.Give the oyster shell & corn starch a break, not the best thing for baby chicks.
I don’t think chickens make the best pets to play with, they are great to watch & admire though.Once they get to know feeding time & see you with feed stuff ,they will all follow you to the given spot. This i suspect is more for the food rather than affection for you.
