Question by James: What brand of deli meats are hormone free?
The big name stores do not carry hormone free deli meat. I am looking for a chicken and a turkey deli meat that is hormone free. Or even the store that carries it. I’m in RI.

  1. The ones purchased from organic/health food stores…ie Natural Foods Co-op, Trader Joe’s, etc.

  2. I really wouldn’t know what. Companies are to cheap, they got to make everything bigger and look better for cheaper. That’s why they use hormones.

  3. Turkey and chicken are not vegetarian foods. This is posted in the vegetarian section. I assume you mean injection of hormones for growth. Hormones are not used for birds in the US because it’s illegal. They are selectively bred and fed for their rapid growth and unhealthy size. The labels are a marketing gimmick. Any label that claims birds to have no hormones added must be followed by, “Federal regulations prohibit the use of hormones.” The same goes for pigs, but not for other animals. However, antibiotics are used.

What’s more of a concern even for your health is how healthy the bird was, and in what conditions the bird lived. Factory farms are horrible.

Here’s some information on the health and welfare of animals in the turkey and chicken industries, as well as others http://www.humanesociety.org/news/publications/whitepapers/farm_animal_welfare.html

I don’t eat birds, but even for people who will not stop eating birds, it’s unhealthy to treat them like garbage, raise them inhumanely, and to produce chickens with the goal of efficiency and profit-making rather than raising healthy birds in more healthy natural conditions. It’s also a rotten thing to do to the birds.
