Question by longliveabcdefg: What are the differences between people from Taipei, Taichung, the south, rural areas?
Which part of Taiwan is considered rural?
Are there any differences among the people from different parts of Taiwan, if any? I’m beginning to notice there are…, it seems to me people from the south are very stubborn and not as friendly, or is it just me?

  1. Based on the percentage of land use applied to agriculture and wilderness areas, the East Coast is far more rural than the rest of Taiwan. Of course, the Central Mountains are the most “rural” as they are pretty much uninhabited. People on the east coast tend to be more laid back and friendly. Stop on by at any place you see them gathering for some great food and a beer!

  2. Taipei: fastest moving, most urbane in general.
Taichung: some what slower moving, still very much a large city.
South: even slower moving, more normal, but less urbane, except for Kaohsiung.
Far south (pingtung) ‘rural-ish’ more like suburban. some fairly rural areas with pigs, dogs, chickens free roaming.
SE- Taitung- most ‘rural’ like place in Taiwan, probably. Very relaxed
Hualien- most like a suburban separate from Taipei area feeling.
Ilan- more of a suburb of Taipei.

Mountain areas: = rural. chickens, pigs, dogs roaming freely. except for Puli and nearby areas on Hwy 14 between CaoTun and Puli. Those are more suburban strip mall feeling.

when I say urbane: I mean exposed to international cultures.
When I say sub urban : I mean like a long strip mall with a narrow strip of green visible in the distance, perhaps up on the mountains nearby are some rural areas.
When I say rural: I mean REALLY countryside, more trees than cars and buildings.
