Question by Sara: What are some types of poultry that are quiet to keep in your garden?
I am getting muscovy ducks and wondered if there are any others like. I was thinking of quiet chicken breeds but even they make a lot of noise when they are laying eggs.

They will be used for meat.

  1. Brahmas are very quiet chickens, although very slow to reach maturity and attain table weight http://www.chickencoopadvice.com/brahma-chicken/

I have a trio within my larger flock of 16 birds and the rooster rarely crows but this could be because he is the 2nd in command so to speak, I have another rooster too. The Brahma hens are laying now and don’t seem particularly loud, I have a few hens that announce to the world that they have laid an egg lol.

  3. As far as chicken breeds go, there are quite a few that are more quiet, and others that are known for being loud and fussy. I have found that my Bantam Cochins and D’Uccles were very quiet and hardly made a sound. My OEGB hens are also quiet. Basically any hen will be quiet unless upset or laying eggs. If you don’t want noise, don’t get a rooster! But again, my D’uccle rooster didn’t crow very much. How much a rooster crows is up to the individual bird though.
If it is meat you are looking for, bantam birds won’t do you a whole lot of good. I raised broilers for the county fair’s pen-of-3, for a few years. They were always quiet, but then again they don’t grow for very long before they are butchered. So I would suggest you get some broilers if you want meat birds who are quiet.
Otherwise, muscovies are the best you will find 🙂 And they are big ole sweethearts! I love my scovies.

  4. Silkies would not be good for meat, Sex links, and leghorns would be good for meat and and the females are very quiet. If you are in Florida, be aware that breeding Muscovy’s is illegal and punishible by a ridiculous fine.

  6. I have two hens that are nice and quiet, when I had three they would bicker! But generally, they might want to share the news that they’ve laid an egg, and they’ll let you know if they’ve run out of food or water, but other than that they aren’t noisy. Just a gentle little chortle now and then!
