Question by Christen: What are some good foods to serve for a bridal shower?
My sister is getting married in July and my mother is throwing her bridal shower in June. It’s going to be a cookout in our backyard. Some of the guests are not as laid back about wedding traditions as we are and are expecting a more elaborate and expensive bridal shower. What are some foods we can serve that will be classier than the average picnic fare without breaking the bank?

Also, any suggestions for games would be appreciated as well. 🙂

  2. fruit and veggie trays (i get the produce from the 99 cent store and cut myself). chips and dip, maybe a pasta salad or potato salad. my friend had a heated crock pot with nacho cheese in it and corn chips for my bridal shower!

for games, the safety pin game – where everyone starts with one safety pin and if anyone says a certain word (like ‘wedding’) then anyone can take their safety pin and who ever has the most safety pins wins. also the wedding dress game, where groups (like 3 groups) gets a couple rolls of toilet paper and have to create a piece of the bride’s gown (like the veil, top, and skirt) and they use the bride as a model to decorate. then the bride picks which group did the best job (this ones a great photo opportunity). and last but not least (and my favorite) the cottonball game, you get a big bowl of cottonballs and a blindfold. everyone attempts to scoop the most cottonballs out of the bowl within a minute. this is hilarious because no one can feel the weight of the cottonballs so some people will scoop air the entire minute. good times. :oD

  4. Chocolate fountain for the fruit pieces…or carve out a watermelon for a basket to hold the fruit…

It’s all in the presentation of the foods. Look for ways to “dress up” the food platters.

Deviled eggs: Try making eggs with gourmet flavors, such as garlic, Dijon mustard, roasted pepper or eggs that have smoked salmon in them.

Stuffed mushrooms: Stuff mushroom caps with a blend of cooked sausage, bread crumbs, egg and herbs. Top with shredded cheese and broil until bubbly for a hot appetizer.

Cheese, mushroom and chicken quesadilla bites: Quesadillas are cheap and easy to make. Make a variety of flavors, and cut them into bite-sized triangles. Provide guacamole, sour cream and salsa for dipping. You could also garnish your bites with a dab of each if you are planning to pass trays.

Cucumber sandwiches: Most cucumber sandwiches are made with a thin slice of cucumber between two slices of party bread (with the crusts cut off) and a thin layer of spread made with mayonnaise, cream cheese and onion. They are quite fancy and add an air of elegance to any shower.

Bacon-wrapped water chestnuts: This appetizer is easy to make. Wrap your whole water chestnuts in bacon, secure with a toothpick, and cook under a broiler for five to 10 minutes or until the bacon is cooked. Turn once, and you have a delicious snack for your guests.

Beverages: Suggested beverages include mimosas (champagne or sparkling wine and orange juice); bellinis (champagne or sparkling wine and peach juice); Bloody Marys (tomato juice, vodka and garnish); white wine; non-alcoholic juices; soda; bottled water; coffee; and tea. OR: are you doing a punch bowl?

    GAME; My Favorite Memory
This one is good for showers where the bride has provided the entire guest list. Along with your invitation, include a printed card that says “please write your favorite memory of the bride or groom”. While the bride is opening presents, each guest stands and reads the card she brought. Typically some are funny, some are sentimental and all are enjoyable to hear. Purchase a photo album to collect the memories and photos of the party. (Or have small cards there for them to fill out as they enter).
