Question by Shidei: What are some crops/plants grown in aquaculture?
I’m doing an essay about aquaculture, and I need to know what kinds of plants are grown in aquaculture.
Feel free to answer in the comment section below
Gelidium- used to make agar (for growing bacteria)
Porphyra- used as a food in Asia
Laminaria (kelp) used to collect iodine, for food, and for a thickening agent called alginate (this is often used to thicken ice cream)
Watercress and Waterchestnuts- food
Aquarium plants

food, carrageenan and colloid sources: wakame (undaria), laminaria, porphyra (laver), eucheuma, caulerpa… (essentially seaweeds. these are popular as food and carrageenan sources in japan, china, southeast asia)
microalgae: used as feed for fish and shrimp hatcheries (e.g. chlorella, diatom species)
aquatic plants for the aquarium trade
aquatic and semiaquatic plants that can be used for bioremediation (e.g. water lilly, lotus, duckweed) and/or the natural fibers are also used for cottage industries to make bags, etc.
