A bunch of us went out to St. Johns to visit Eric’s (and Ben’s) chicks. This was their second time outside and they were having a grand old time.

What are some common dishes in the Pacific Northwest (Alaska, Washington, and Oregon) of the US? Are there ingredients that are indigenous to the region?

Blackberries seems common, they grow all over. Salmon too is famous here. Hazlenuts also. At least in Oregon.

Go to the tourism board of each state and find the local restaurants and their menus and check them out. You can find King crab in Alaska. Salmon everywhere on the coast and Halibut too. Check out the menus. Try the local farmers markets www. and go to Pike Street Market website in Seattle. There are a lot of sustainability issues around food. Go to the local Native band websites on the Olympic peninsula and watch them hunt whale – the Makah band.

Wild meats of a wide variety are common in Alaska, especially rural areas. This includes moose, bear, caribou, sheep, even beaver. Along the coast and rivers you have fish like salmon, trout, and dolly varden. Also seafoods like halibut and shellfish. More unusual seafoods that may be eaten in some coastal villages include muktuk (whale blubber) and seal. However, normal store bought meats are the most used in urban areas like beef, pork, and chicken.
Alaskan gardens grow cool weather crops like cabbages, potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, beans, and peas.
Berries common to interior Alaska include blueberries, raspberries, low bush cranberries, high bush cranberries, and salmonberries. Wild rose hips are also used for jellies and tea.
