Question by Asymmetrics: What are some benefits of aquaculture?
I was wondering if you could give me some significant benefits/pros for aquaculture (fish-farming) for an essay I have to write.

Some strong arguments that can counter the environmental argument against it would be great.

All I can seem to find for the benefits is that it’s a very important economic activity. Can you help me expand on this as well?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

  1. Aquaculture contributes to the food source. For one thing, the fish that is cultured need not be caught in the open seas. There are benefits derived from this as it gives livelihood to the people employed in these projects. And if the produce of this venture is exported, then it contributes to the GNP of the country. Unlike other industries, you don’t have to worry about effluents coming out from the business. It does not give pollutants to the atmosphere as does ranches, poultry and piggery does. The inputs to this industry could be produced locally. It could bring down prices of fish in the particular area where it operates because of added supply.
