Rosie, an urban chicken in Madison, WI. She lives just off of Farley Avenue, not in the country!
Question by : What animal lives in the city that could kill a rabbit and a couple of chickens?!?
Hey guys. Alright so not too long ago my uncle owned a little rabbit and a couple of chickens. We live in San Jose city in a nice, quiet neighborhood. No forests around, no lakes, just the urban city. The strange and disturbing thing is…his animals were brutally killed. Their bloods were sucked dry, chicken feathers all over the place, and their only their heads were left. What kind of animal eats like this!? It doesn’t happen only at night, but it also happens in the day! One day, a happy bunny roaming the backyard…the next hour…dead. What kind of animal could have done this and what can be done about it?! Thank you in advance.

Couple of questions…
Was his house locked properly?
Did your uncle hear any noise when it was being attacked?
Did the animals have any “scars” on it’s body?
If his a house is locked properly, it couldn’t be a dog of any kind. You can’t really find large animal (except dogs, cats, etc) in an urban city so it probably didn’t eat it. Cats nor dogs nor raccoon would eat couple of chickens and a rabbit. Cats and dogs rarely come in group, they tend to be solitary. I wouldn’t say it’s a snake because these animals keep away into the forest, especially the large ones.
This narrows it down into a cat (you can’t find any raccoon in Costa Rica) or a Monitor Lizard or other large types of carnivorous lizards (reptiles).
Large reptiles probably couldn’t come into the house so it’s probably the cat.

Mink, marten, weasel, all behave this way. They are extremely good predators, small, fast, sharp teeth and claws.
The best way to protect your animals is to ensure their cages, coop, hutch is well fenced, including underground around the cage. Make sure there are no holes in fine wire, no way to dig under, no way to get in. The predator is driven by hunger and will not give up easily.
