Sugar Syrup for Beekeeping

I know some beekeepers hate using sugar syrup for bees, and I generally don’t like it – but there are some occasions where you need to feed your bees. You can not feed your bees honey from other hives – ESPECIALLY not commercial honey – due to the risk of spreading American Foul Brood which will cause you to have to burn your hives bees and all… My queen took advantage of the mild winter to start laying eggs sooner – which caused my bees to eat all the honey I left for them, if I do not feed them sugar to tide them over until they can start gathering nectar then they starve…

  1. We’re supposed to here in the communist state of MD to your south. But I didn’t and have no intention to unless they are going to go out in the woods and permit every wild hive as well. More government BS.

  2. No, I haven’t gotten that far, but next year I plan on trying to catch some pollen for that reason. Right now I am trying to learn one bee concept at a time – this week it is swarm traps… If you know how I would love to watch a video on it…

  4. Sugar water is used for a multitude of things. I used to haul it in 25 tons at a time. One of my customers fed it to his bees too with sugar water.

  5. I get what your saying – when I started my hives the neighbors were nervous – a little outreach and now I get people asking to buy honey… I don’t really like being “registered” either- BUT – here in TN – its for the specific function of protecting against American Foulbrood and so its more than just government wanting info on who does what. As long as you have removable frames you can keep bees in almost anything… Look up “top bar hive” for some ideas. Look up AFB to see about registration

  6. I`m eventually gonna get me some hives. I understand there`s a number of different types of hive. I`m interested in a non-descript design that will not attract any interest by anyone who may be interested, Know what I mean? Here in the Peoples Republic of Pennsylvania, you must register your beehives, or so I`ve been told. Do you know about Guerilla Beekeeping? Thanks.

  8. Sorry for the teaser – The delivery system video as well as the article is coming along later – (october is when it is scheduled) but since you asked – I use mason jars with one piece lids – small holes punched with a small finishing nail – turned upside down in either a device that hangs on the front of the hive – or in an empty super inside the hive. Many Many ways of doing it – but those 2 are simplest…
