Square Foot Gardening without a Raised Bed at a Local Community Garden

John from www.growingyourgreens.com goes on a field trip to a local community garden to check out how people are growing the Square Foot Garden Method. In addition you will learn how you can protect your strawberry crop from the birds using CDs and how you can use handbags to prevent bugs from eating your crops.

  1. Compost here is $16 a yard at Sonoma Compost. If someone does not have a truck they can purchase compost for $2 a 3 cubic foot bag and haul it in their car. It is NOT that expensive in this area. Im not exactly sure the reasons WHY they did not fill their raised bed, but I wanted to point it out to others that its my believe if you have a raised bed, you should fill it, of course, thats my opinion, I encourage everyone to always do they BEST they can.. and grow in the best SOIL they can.

  2. John, love your vids, but this one was a bit too negative. They probably fully intend on filling those raised beds as time goes on and compost comes in. Around here, topsoil is $40/yd plus delivery, and with my raised beds on granite slab, I too would love to have more soil.

  5. Watching this, I am thinking that the gardeners might not have all that much money and are using and working with what they can get their hands on. love all the recycling and reusing going on. Buying soil to fill a raised bed is not in everybody’s budget and if one has no car or truck, hard to transport. They might have been able to get the wood and waiting for next growing season to get the soil….

  11. the ‘lady’ with the bag covers is probably keeping out beneficial insects too. bird netting will let bees through…her netting looks too small for that.

  12. @Planting81 You should be all set. IF you do have a problem try hanging a wind chime or you could cover them with netting like you saw in the video. Good luck!

Bolting means getting ready to flower, and then go to seed.

  16. Interesting to see so many different methods with fruitful results. Me I have to try everything to learn which works for me. Last year I tried sq ft garden following Mel’s latest methods, this year I tried square ft gardening without using mel’s mix… just plain loam and local compost. Side by side comparison the loam/compost plant were healthier than mel’s mix. Nutrient wise I have no way of measuring but i added plenty of fertilizer to all my gardens.

  19. Another great video!! Do you have any tips on growing blueberries and blackberries. I remember when they use to grow in my grandmother’s back yard and we use to pick them all the time. But for some reason when I plant them they die off.

  21. I filled my raised beds with equal parts sand, peat moss and compost and my veggies are growing amazingly well. This is my first garden experience and I am learning so much. I am not having much luck with the berries.
