In May 2012, I decided to start a vegetable garden for the first time in my life. Like many of you, I am parent with a full-time out of the house job. I am not a homesteader or garden hobbiest….

Nice job Heather, I noticed your dragonfly, any chance you bought it from
a major retailer?
Good video. You should be proud of your initial start. I myself started a
backyard garden. I researched videos and local garden clubs for ideas. It
is very rewarding growing and eating what you plant. Believe me you will
get better each year. Good Luck.
Hi Heather & Mum,
Thanks for posting this video. I’m also a novice gardner too and I’ve
recently had great success making a herb garden in a wheelbarrow. Have just
come across the concept of Square-foot gardening and this is how I came
across your video. I live in Western Australia which I believe has a
similar climate to California so hopefully I’ll be able to use some of your
ideas here.
Thanks for this vid.
Nice video from a beginner. I’ve been learning about soil culture for many
years and its paying off from building the soil after some experimentation.
Compost is hard to get where I live and the stuff in stores is not very
good. I started a worm farm to compost waste materials and its awesome
stuff to use in your garden.
Nice of you to share your experiences. Do you have an update? I’m like you
and starting off from scratch using YouTube clips and the Internet for
advice.
Hi…Awesome to see you getting into gardening. The square foot method is
pretty neat and great for small spaces. Keep it up and keep experimenting
and doing what works for you. What’s great about gardening is that there
are many, many ways to do things and the discovering of how to make things
grow. GOOD LUCK!!
good video, I like your set up. on a side note unless your saving seeds
then you can plant watermelon, cucumbers or anything else next to each
other, they form a hybrid in the seeds but it wont affect the fruit the
year planted. Please post an update would like to see how your garden is
going:)
Nice going on your first SFG. Hope it all went well…you should visit me
at thewealthyearth. I’ve been doing and teaching this for 14 years and I
try to catalog my experiences during the entire growing season, which is
year round for me in Utah…it might give you some additional ideas
I sub’d your channel. Even seasoned gardeners are always learing new
things. I just learned something from a novice! I see the true value of
weed barrier cloth! I have never had luck in garden zone 7 with weed
barrier cloth. The weeds grow right thru it but as a shade cloth i can see
real value for the product! I will be using this innovation in one of my
videos in the future. I will mention your channel as the inspiration or
source for the idea.

I began square foot gardening in North Florida last February, so I
definitely understand about the heat! We bought a roll of shade block, and
it was the only way our spring cabbage and cauliflower made it because it
warms up so quickly here. We also used it during August when it is so hot
in order to shade tomatoes and bell pepper, both of which were getting
sunburn. We used metal conduit for our vertical supports, which isn’t that
expensive. Good video. Keep us updated!
Just found your video , and you look like your well on your way. I to am a
new gardener , I think you will be happy if you see my videos I don’t go
into how I did it but I do say how the garden got started. Good luck (John)
