www.e-junkie.com Wendy gives a tour of our first attempt at “Square Foot Gardening.” Our home garden was useless for the past couple of years, so we decided to spruce it up a bit. So, Wendy learned about square foot gardening, we went to a few classes, and this is the results. Join us for a salad!
The white strips are a grid which divides the garden into one foot squares. Not only does this keep the garden orderly as mentioned by curry76 but it helps with planting and replanting each square so you know exactly what to put where. I have had the additional benefit of the grids preventing animals from digging in the garden because the grids are in their way. I use lath strips for the grids.

…supposedly, it’s to keep everything neat and orderly. Ensuring that you are able to plant as much as you can in such limited space.

You guys are obviously pleased about what you are doing there … and you should be. Very nice! I do have just one question for you (or for any “square foot” gardener); Just why all the white strips every foot or so? Just ask yourself, “Would my plants grow better, worse, or just the same without those white strips?” I have never had the need to put white strips of material between any of my plants to grow them good. Lots of folks do it and I still scratch my head as to why.
