Lol I saw a snake just like that one when I was outside working on my
raised bed. They are harmless. You have a beautiful garden. We been getting
crazy weather here too. One week it would rain and then some very hot
weather and then back to rain. So I have the majority of my plants in my
balcony until I can fix my 2 raised bed.
OMG thats snake! *Screams!* Okay….phew. I would probably scream myself
silly if I saw one. Did you sling him/her back in the yard? Glad you are
getting some fruit from the butternut even though all this rain we have
been getting. They must taste great. Your peppers are looking great and
those caterpillars on the collards. Yikes! Yeah I hope you have your BT by
now. This rain is something! Nice update.
You might have had a lot of rain but the garden is looking great. I would
say that tomato in the hex garden had a blight caused by the wet weather.
Never eaten squash raw in a salad looked good. I hate snakes was that one
poisonous?
Those butternut seemed to grow in a fairly quick time. I hope you can find
the BT but with all the rain I mean won’t it wash off? Or do a garlic
pepper spray type deal? THis rain has been a trip but its good to learn
what will grow in this wet mucky stuff and won’t. I thought butternuts
needed to cure too. Glad you don’t have to wait. Darn snake!
the butternut squash eaten raw has a texture similar to a carrot(slightly
softer) but with the wonderful buttery nut taste. its probably healthy to
eat it that way too, i just tried it because cooking is more work and more
cleanup. easier is mo better, lol. The snake was a basic lawn snake,
non-poisonous, it was looking for high ground to get out of the nonstop
rain storms.
hi, i think it was a black rat snake, a general variety non-poisonous yard
snake. it was weird that it slithered right up to the front door, first
time ive ever seen one do that.
the rain has finally stopped here the last few days. forecast shows just
dry weather for awhile thankfully. yeah it was cool to find out the
butternuts taste just fine and basically exactly like the ones i bought
from the store. the vine borers didnt mess with them either so i’ll def be
growing this again next year… probably in one of the outside raised beds
since they didnt seem to like the tray containers.
thanks, i made a mistake and ate one without cutting the seeds out of the
middle…. whooooah it was super hot! theyre much better when cored and
deseeded, a mild heat, yumm.
thanks, yeah it was weird to see the snake slither right up to the front
door, its home must of been flooded out during the rainstorm. i checked
back on it a few minutes later and it was already gone. the couple
butternuts have been good eating, surprisingly they taste fine right off
the vine. I was under the impression they needed to cure for a few months
since they are ‘winter squash’. in the next few days i’ll go to Lowes and
pickup the BT, grrr i hate those caterpillars messin up the greens
hi, i see the bees buzzing around and they pollinate them. sometimes i see
a few ants crawling on them too, i guess the ants can also transfer pollen
from one flower to the next. if i didnt see the insects i’d probably try
hand pollinating with a q-tip or small paintbrush.

Nice, I’ve never had luck growing squash and cukes in small containers like
that. Where we are they dry out WAY too quick.
