Sissy Farmer (Joel Salatin on Forgiveness)

Joel Salatin has more than a few ideas about how food can be grown abundantly without harm. His Polyface Farms is the very definition of carrying capacity. He’s a good example of why, in this post-AnnaNicole world, all my heros are writers, scientists and farmers.

  1. Good thing I’m a woman farmer…don’t have to worry about being a sissy! ha. I do love Joel Salatin, but it’s funny how he acts like all farmers are men.

  2. @11bandit20 he doesn’t use gmo’s and if you read any of his books you can learn more about his winter feeding schedule. I know he says that his cows go out to pasture much earlier than his neighbors and come in much later in the fall. The rest of the feed I believe is bailage he has grown.

  7. i completely agree with you, but he still feeds gmo and during the winter how do you think he is still so sustainable he never explains this in any of his videos. i would like to know what his winter routines are in my own opinion theres more than what meets the eye with what he does, its all with good intentions but he still is using some unsustainable systems during the winter because the grass and forests aren’t green then. remember the more good publicity he gets the more money he can make

  10. @nichins – we discovered a video where Joel actually says literally that he uses GMO feed – and naturally we were appalled, because we are big fans of his work. My partner posted this in a state of some upset. However, since then we have heard from Joel himself that he misspoke, which is a huge relief. So, crisis over!

  11. @helkyrie What makes you think he uses GMO feed? As far as I know, his farm is organic.

  15. tell me one thing that we can consume that wasn’t alive at some point? the only thing i can think of is water, but you can hardly survive on that, can you? all your veggies, juices, and anything else that is nutritional was alive at some point. animals, veggies, fruits, any plants… there is absolutely no way to survive if you are not killing something to eat/drink.

  20. And on forgiveness for using Monsanto (& the ilk) GMO grain to feed his chickens & pigs. Forgiveness for th health problems for the human consumers. For giving money into the land-killing corporation’s pocket. For the spread of uncontainable GMO genes? Joel is a hypocrite to use GMO feed.

  22. I love the Forgiveness message contained within here; survival always comes to those who hold the greatest consciousness, for they can see beyond the masses. Almost sounds like your a Course in Miracles fan, but either way keep up the great work. Peace to you from Australia xxx

  24. @sarahshevett ; A.) Most farmers are men and B.) Only men are concerned with being masculine enough. For those two reasons Joel is addressing the issue of sissyness. Women generally don’t care about being perceived as sissies. Clearly, you’ve missed the point on purpose so that you can enjoy some misdirected righteous indignation. Do you want Joel to address the issue of men being perceived as good mothers too? Find something REAL to complain about.
