Should my dog be getting whole grain brown rice?

At Post Carbon Institute…they keep their compost piles within the chicken coop.

I’m debating over whether to use this design or not…I like that you could buy less feed for the chickens, but I do like a coop setup where you don’t have to close the chickens in at night (you have to have sturdy fencing on all sides, including the top, to do this, but the advantage is that you can leave for a night or two without a house sitter).

The compost pile is going to attract potential predators and I don’t think I’d put it in with the chickens if I were trying to keep my fencing predator-proof. I’d probably lose some chickens and be constantly fixing the fence.

Question by Sue: Should my dog be getting whole grain brown rice?
I was feeding chicken soup for the dog lover’s soul, large breed adult dog formula, and it has really been helping with my rottie’s allergies and she has been doing great for the past year that we’ve been feeding her this. However, she is getting a little heavy, so we decided to try adult dog light formula, it’s the same brand, just a different formula.
I just realized that the first ingredient in it is whole grain brown rice instead of chicken, however chicken is the second ingredient.
Will the rice affect her?

  1. I often give my dogs brown rice with their veggies and chicken. You usually want meat as first ingredient but since its a light formula Im not sure how that works as far as ingredients goes. But no, rice isnt going to hurt your dog in any way. the Chicken Soup dog foods are a good quality food so as long as it works for your Rotti, then stick with it.

  2. It shouldn’t its actually good for their digestion system. My rot has colon problems and the vet has me make her rice with a little sugar(to get her to eat it) to help with digestion

  3. i feed my dog a premium quality dog food (right now he’s on solid gold, tho we did switch around a bit, with blue buffalo & chicken soup & innova lol) & sometimes i’d mix in some meat or veggies or brown rice, when he was being picky & he ended up loving my home made dog food lol now i mix the kibble with meat & either a veggie that’s OK for dogs (like carrots & peas) or brown rice… so yeah it’s totally OK =))
