SHARE El Salvador: Sustainable Agriculture in San Simon

El Salvador is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world facing climate change, and food security is a serious issue for thousands of subsistence rural farmers and their families. Organic methods, native seeds, community organization and disaster preparedness are all part of the solution for communities like San Simon, Usulutan, El Salvador. In this video, community leaders share their efforts to recuperate native seeds, organize their community, learn about organic farming, and prepare for the next disaster. Unfortunately, in October 2011 this disaster struck: torrential rains associated with Tropical Depression 12E wrought havoc on El Salvador, causing flooding, mudslides, and forcing the evacuation of over 50000. Over 150 million pounds of basic grains — the beans and tortillas of every day — were lost. Organized communities like San Simon are the best prepared to face these disasters, access government and non-government aid, and rebuild for the future.
