Raising your own Pigs/Hogs

Raising your own is a challenge or it was for me. We bartered one for the other and the other showed up like this a couple of days ago. More to come on cost and agravation!

  1. Honesty I don’t remember the price we were quoted. What we ended up doing was bartering one of the pigs for having the other one butchered. We raised two. Also, the meat came back in big packages. I wrapped it myself instead of paying someone else to do it. I do remember there are two different weights and butchers are different, so pay attention to “hanging weight” or “on the hoof weight” (I think it is.)

  2. If it’s not to personal, how much does it cost to have an animal slaughtered. Thanks for sharing.

  5. We have nosy neighbors. Even though we have high fences… some one would say something then we would be in trouble. So I have to live through fellow preppers at the moment. 🙂

  6. Oh no! No chickens? Bummer! I don’t think our neighbors (although they aren’t real close by) even realized the pigs were here! LOL

  8. It was quite challenging. They outgrew the area we had them in, had to expand it and we fought 100 degree days all summer. But, worth it in the end!

  11. That’s a lot of meat. I bet you had fun wrapping and labeling it. Your better for the experience though. I’d love to give it a try.
