@poultrycrazy CAE stands for Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis, it can be a devastating disease, however, goats can live with it and not express any symptoms. You can keep CAE positive does separate from the rest of the herd and it is possible to get CAE negative kids from her as long as she is not allowed to nurse them. Whatever milk from a CAE positive doe must be pasteurized before giving it to other kids. Colostrum is produced for the first week (approx.) and you give that to the kids.

i’m new to dairy goats and want to learn every thing I can before I get my kid… What does CAE stand for?Aren’t the kids supposed to drink from the mom for one day to get all the calostrum?( <- sorry for incorrect spelling...) Would people be more interested in buying babies from a CAE free herd?

Yah, cheers alright! That milk should have been heat treated going from her to the young kids to prevent CAE, and various other diseases!.
