Question by Tinh Khau: Raise goats for eating grass?
I have one acre land and I don’t want to mower the grass, so I am thinking about keep a pair of goat and let them eat the grass and weeds for me. I never raise goats before so: Is it a good idea? Is there anything I need to know, what breed to buy? What do I need to feed them in winter when all grass is gone.
Thanks.

  1. Goats are great fun. If you want lawn mowers you want pygmy goats, standard goats will pull all the grass up and eat it all, roots included. For one acre a pair will get the job done once they are full grown. They will eat literally anything, metal, wires, plastic, so you need to keep things out of their way so that they don’t hurt themselves. They need a fresh supply of timothy hay which is very cheap to buy, they need this at all times when grass isn’t present and there are different items at your local feed store that you can give them too, even goat vitamins. They are similar to dogs and you can allow them in your house if you like because they can be potty trained, just leave the backdoor open for them to go in and out and they won’t go in your house. They do need each other, are very very social and must always have another goat present. Easy and sweet pets that are good with children and other animals.

  2. Goats will definitely help you keep your lawn in shape. An acre of grass should be plenty of food for them as long as you stay with the pair. Goats do eat just about anything. I saw one chewing on a shingle one time. Little billy goats can be a bit feisty. I witnessed a small billy goat head butt a kid once right in the belly. He knocked the kid down and the child was not hurt but it is something to note if you have small children.

  3. sounds good. you need an extremely good fence, and you can feed them timothy or grass hay if they eat all the grass down. They need free access to water, and a shelter to get in. Goats HATE being wet. Breeds are up tp you, even though Pygmy goats are cute, friendly, and so much smaller, making them easy to handle. If you dont want babies, get either two females (does) or wethers () casterated males. or one of each. you dont want intact billy goats, they stink, they can get… frisky, and they will breed anything.
