Question by : question about used rail road ties in my yard?
i’m thinking of using old rail road ties as a retaining wall or as boarder for flower beds you raised garden but some one told me there tar in the rail road ties and that it attracts bees and wasps. Is this true? I know there are some rr ties that have arsenic in them and that I don’t want those ones but is there any draw back for using them for a retaining wall near my pool for for gardening?
Feel free to answer in the comment section below
I would not use rail road ties in any kind of garden- vegetable or flower. I don’t know about attracting bees and wasps (bees would probably be good for your garden anyway), but they contain a lot of harmful chemicals. These chemicals (for example, creosote tar) will leach into your soil. If the chemicals don’t cause harm directly to your plants, they will harm other life in the soil and possibly be leached into groundwater or other water sources.
If you google your question, I’m sure you’ll see that many people have asked it before, and the majority of the answers are against creosote-treated railroad ties.
You could contact whomever you got the ties from and ask what they were treated with and if they’re safe for garden use. There’s no guarantee that they’ll know, but its worth it to ask them.

any type of container or walled type garden is an attraction to bees and wasps. all you have to do is keep an eye on it . if your plan is to make it more that 2 feet high i suggest you talk to a landscape designer on how to support and anchor it with what we call “deadman” otherwise your wall will eventually be in your lovely pool before long.

CAN be attractive to termites and don’t last forever best use another material.
