Planting Tomatoes in the Greenhouse – Determinate Rutgers

I’m cleaning out the small greenhouse and planting it full of determinate Rutgers tomatoes. Its a simple process. Just dig a trench, fill it with composted horse manure, lime, and few other ingredients to suit your growing style. Mix it all up and put your plant in it. This variety of tomato produced extremely well last year, on a smaller scale. So I’ve decided to up the ante and load the whole greenhouse with these tomatoes. If all goes well, I’m gonna need some help picking tomatoes.

  1. MHP is for mobile home park. I own and manage one. And I do pretty much everything associated with it. Its a lot of work, especially during the warm months when the grass grows so fast.

  5. Thx. I started the plants a little bit too early, so they were taller than I’d like. Also, the ground is very dry inside the GH. The only water the plants get is from what I give them. So laying them sideways allows me to bury that long stem, thereby making up for me starting them too early. And it also allows for root development closer to the surface, where I’ll be watering. It works out pretty good. 😉

  6. Hey Jeremy, both of the greenhouses are homemade, not commercial at all. And the hydro setup for the lettuce is the same way. Its a bunch of parts that I bought and assembled. Trying to buy things in kits can get rather expensive, so I try to find ways to DIY everything.

  16. I hope to be able to do that. I drove by the market today and only saw one person out there selling strawberries. I could probably go sell a few maters now, but I just don’t have time during the day to sit there for a few hours waiting.

  17. Killin you? LOL…. nah….. just playing around ! We WERE wet. But we’ve missed the last couple of rains and it is drying out fast. I’m having to water my onions outside. I’m tilling the gardens, getting ready, and its turning into a dusty desert in a hurry. But rain or shine, we’re gonna keep at it. Thank you sir !

  22. Well, because I have about a million tons of mulch, manure, and other delicious “stuff” going onto my garden areas right now, we are using grow bags this year, until the gardens are prepared for planting. I also got some more grow bags, manure, peat moss, and lots of good “stuff” for the bags too, and I’m starting the seeds tomorrow. I’m going to start them in the small bags, and replant in the 5 gal. size, and I can’t wait. I’m also working on a shallow well too, so the list is very long again

  23. Its not so much a preference. The deciding factor is how I plan to grow it. If I can go vertical, I’ll use the ind. If I can’t, I’ll use cages and the det variety. But if I had to pick one, I’d probably go with the det variety just because of sheer production. And its easier to do cages than it easy to do strings and keep them suckered. Showing off? Me? Nah, you know not !

  25. Thanks. I still have a few weeks to go before I plant tomatoes outside. Even if it didn’t frost, the ground is so cool that they wouldn’t do much. So I’m trying to be patient….but it aint easy. Crazy weather indeed…but I like it !
