New Wind Turbine Design Good for Rural, Urban Environment

Wind power is one of the fastest growing forms of alternative energy in the world. More and more, wind power mills are seen in the countryside, in large wind farms and for the most part, away from city life. But a new form of wind power is now designed to work in an urban environment. VOA producer Zulima Palacio has the story. Mill Arcega narrates.

  1. we watched this in science class when we were learning about windmills. this video really helped me understand windmills.

  2. wrong! it depends on the size of the turbine. You don’t see this in the windfarms because it’s like a new concept.I remember there is one windfarm in California has this tho. It’s very different from the vertical stuff that’s your thinking. It can generate 100% power for the average homes. I personally love the propeller wind turbines , but they are noisy. This concept is a future for residential homes!

  3. That vertical stuff does not generate much power. Ever see a wind farm using those? It’s because windfarms only use designs that make plenty of power.

  4. We don’t have a GENERATION problem in this country. We have a STORAGE and TRANSMISSION problem. We desperately need new (lighter) methods to store electrical potential, and lower resistance transmission (wires) systems.

  5. Notice from 0:08 to 0:11, only a few of the turbines are even moving. Even though they can get these up, it takes a lot of money to keep them maintained. So sometimes they stay motionless.

ZERO-NOISE from gears and generators since they are sealed underground.
SAVES THE BIRDS AND BATS since slow-moving.
DOES NOT NEED TO OCCUPY A WIDER LANDSCAPE since the turbine can be very tall.
MAY BE LOWER-COST since it may use timber and other cheaper things.
ELUDES HURRICANE FORCE since the blades automatically close.
NO FIRE since it is kept cool.
HELPS THE WIND ENERGY COMPANIES since it is FREE FOR ALL.

ZERO-NOISE from the gears and the generators because they are silenced underground (Only the outer parts of the turbines may create sound.).
This SAVES THE BIRDS AND BATS (since slow-moving) and helps the wind energy companies (since it is FREE FOR ALL.).

There are two major problems preventing electric cars from becoming mainstream
    1) Short range ( a serious but not insurmountable technological problem)
    2) High price (as expected from any new technology)

These problems need to be addressed separately. Now I agree that if the grid is fed with cleaner and renewable energy like wind, it will add a very good reason to fix it. I hope it happens soon.

  12. ok, if u had a windmill that could produce more electricity than u need, would it make sense to buy an electric car?

  14. The other states need to start following California’s example. It’s cheap and effective technology, not a full solution, but a huge part of our (hopefully inevitable) transition to green energy. Also fuck the birds and bats, it’s their fault for flying into the things.

  16. Wind is already about as cheap as coal in the US although more expensive than gas. Comparing it with oil doesn’t really makes sense, since oil is for transportation, not for electricity generation. Making electricity to feed the grid with oil at current price would be silly expensive.

  19. The video mentioned independent tests, but neglected to tell us the results. I guess we’re supposed to assume that everything checked out because they’re still playing the video.

  20. @nek0s You’re right we have the technology, but I’m not sure corrupt is the word to use.In order to become completely dependent on WWS power within the next 40 yrs it would take an amount of manufacturing and construction above anything we’ve ever done,WW2 scale. With WWS costing about 4x as much for the same amount of power(not including start up) from a business standpoint it’s not feasible to do it on that large of scale. It wont happen in 1 decade or even 5.Long term phase out is more realistic
