Question by eat_slp.fish: need advice with domestic turkeys?
i raised two turkeys with intent of thanksgiving and Xmas dinner ,but with thanksgiving fast on the approach ive grown concerned with the fact that i cant get with in 100 feet of either of them.
to make life more difficult i live in city limits and can only shoot with a shot gun which defeats the purpose of raising them my self, however i do have a pellet rifle with a Velocity of 645 fps would this be efficient to kill the turkey provided i take a head shot?

  1. I would think so if you do hit it in the head. I shot a rabbit in the head with one about that fps, the rabbit walked about 20 feet and died.

Have you tried leading them into a pen by feeding your turkeys with crack corn. Leave a bit of feed in spots closer to a pen, then leave it in a trail into a pen, in time you should be able to get them on you table without wasting a single pellet.

    Good luck and good eats.

  2. you could claim it was in self defense and you grabbed the first gun available. just an idea..
“It was coming right at me and I feared for my life”

have you considered trying to make a trap? if you could get your tasty friend into a pen and fix the door with a pull string. if you make it, and leave it alone, put food into it, you should be able to gain their confidence and spring the trap at your leisure

ADDED: I almost forgot the most important part. Make sure you place a weapon by the dead turkey or no one will believe you killed it in self-defense

  4. Turkey are not the brightest critters, just bait them in with a decoy and some good feed set a trap and get your turkey. Or try using a bow it is quiet and effective. Using the Gobbler Guillotine arrowhead you lop off the head of the turkey for a one shot no fuss no mess humane kill.

  5. Just bait them into a fence….or bait them close enough and shoot them. A pellet that weak won’t kill a turkey unless its a lucky shot. A head is a small target for a pellet gun .If you miss you will scare them away…maybe for good.

  6. Feeding them will work. But turkeys roost at night, just find the tree they roost in, shine them with a flash light and when you get a head shot……..turkeys on!
