Question by Sarah U: My son is a year old w/ cows milk, goats milk, and soy allergies – What do I do now?
My son just turned a year old and has the allergies to Cows Milk, Goats Milk, and Soy. I have no idea if I should keep him on formula or what. He’s on Nutramigen Hypoallergenic formula. I just don’t know what to do because I know he needs the fast and everything from milk. Has someone expeirenced this before? Can anyone give me any answers?

  1. I wonder if you have had him tested by an allergist for all these.
If so, then your pediatrician should be giving you ideas for alternatives – there is rice milk, almond milk, etc.

  2. I have 2 children with milk allergies. When they weaned I just made sure they got plenty of healthy fats. They loved avocados in any form and hummus with olive oil.

  3. Hi, milk isn’t absolutely necessary to raise a healthy child. I am a congenital lactose intolerant and have done just fine. I am also soy and gluten intolerant as well.
The Nutramigen should give him plenty of vitamins and minerals that he needs for his developing body. Now you just need to make sure he gets plenty of healthy whole foods to compliment that.
When you need to finally take him off the formula, there are plenty of options now. I personally like hemp and nut milks (almond, hazelnut, etc.) . (I do NOT recommend any non-gluten free rice milk though, especially in the case that your child may have celiac as well, btw.) You need to ask your pediatrician to make sure you get a consult with a dietitian to make sure that you are feeding a well balanced and healthy diet as well as making sure that you have adequate amounts of calcium and vitamins that he will not be getting from milk and milk products. (dairy and soy free supplements are pretty easy to find now a days).
Just a suggestion, you may want to keep in touch with Moo for more information as you need it. Every answer I have seen of hers is reliable and then some!
p.s. Hey Moo! Happy New Year!
