Question by Joey L:look ma, no hands!: My sister put a compost in the backyard and a makeshift beehive. Is it no longer safe to go lay out?
I heard compost can attract wasps, hornets, yellow jackets and the like. And am afraid some may build a nest in on the house. And I don’t know what to think of the bees. Now I feel like I cannot even layout in the backyard. My parents cannot control her! She has turned into a dirty hippie!
and compost full of rotting fruit and peels that turn into sweet stinking liquid do too attract wasps, etc. research it online. Why do you think they swarm around garbage cans at public places, like parks and stuff?

  1. The best solution is to grow up and move out, or clean up her mess & maybe she will move out.

Why is she composting? Is she going to grow a garden? If not, then it is just a stinky mess, especially if it isn’t taken care of properly. Hopefully it isn’t too close to the house.

I have never heard of compost attracting anything but flies, but the makeshift behive could be a problem. I guess that would depend on what kind of bees set up houskeeping & whether you are alergic. Either way, they hurt.

I vote for dumping her mess when she isn’t home. Be prepared for the fireworks though. Maybe your folks will grow a backbone.

For the most part, you should be safe enough going out in the yard. If bees take up residence, I would avoid using cocoanut taning lotion, anything with perfume will attract them. I’m sure you have heard of all the dangers of tanning, your sister has just added another element of danger. Thanks sis.

  2. Silly person, compost doesn’t draw wasps , hornets or yellow jackets. Its about time you learned something about nature. Wasps , hornets and yellow jackets are attracted by plants and water, not compost piles.
Bees wont hurt you if you dont swat at them. Bees are necessary for the food chain and life in general.
YAY for hippies! Too bad more people arent like your sister.

By the way, I have been composting for 30 years and my neighbors dogs attract more pests than a properly prepared compost pile does.

What are you doing to help the earth? Eventually you will awake to the idea that all that trash your family generates is harming the ecology. Your municipality will eventually start forcing you to recycle and part of that is composting.

  3. Composters attract mice and rats, not wasps and hornets. Bees won’t bug you if you don’t bug them. Nothing wrong with being a little enviro-friendly.

  5. What’s wrong with hippies? They have morals. She can be whoever she wants. It’s her choice, not your parent’s.
